🌿 How to Print and Make Your Own Bookmarks (Simple, No‑Stress Instructions)
Making your own bookmarks at home is easy, and you don’t need any special tools. Just a printer, scissors or a paper trimmer, and (optional) a laminator if you want a glossy, durable finish.
Here’s the exact process, step by step.
1. Print the pattern paper (this becomes the back of the bookmark)
Start by printing the pattern paper on one side of your letter‑sized sheet.
This will be the reverse side of your bookmark.
-
Use regular or cardstock paper
-
Print at 100% (no scaling)
-
Let the ink dry before flipping
2. Flip the paper over and print the front of the bookmark
Turn the sheet over and print the front design on the other side.
Because the files are already sized and centered, you don’t need alignment tools — just flip and print.
Note for PNG users:
PNG files will import very large in Silhouette Studio.
This is normal.
Just scale the PNG down until the bookmark measures 2 × 6 inches before printing or cutting.
Note about bookmark styles:
Different bookmark designs have different finishing options.
Some include a hole (or a printed circle) for adding an eyelet and tassel.
Others — like pull‑tab styles — have no hole at all and are meant to stick up from the book so you can easily grab and pull them.
Your file will show exactly what your bookmark is intended to look like.
3. (Optional) Laminate the full sheet
If you want your bookmarks to be sturdy and glossy, laminate the entire printed sheet before cutting.
Why laminate first?
-
cleaner edges
-
no shifting
-
no peeling
-
everything stays aligned
Run the whole sheet through the laminator once.
4. Cut out the bookmarks
Use scissors, a paper trimmer, or a cutting machine — whatever you prefer.
Cut along the edges of each bookmark.
Cut off the edges before placing on the mat.
If you laminated, cut through the laminate and cardstock together.
5. (Optional but recommended) Run the finished bookmarks through the laminator again
This step uses no pouch at all.
You’re simply taking the already laminated, already cut bookmark and running it back through the laminator by itself.
Think of it like smoothing or tightening the finish.
This second pass:
-
reseals any edges the cutting lifted
-
smooths the laminate
-
tightens the seal
-
helps prevent peeling over time
No new pouch.
No extra plastic.
Just a quick reseal.
Optional finishing touches
Depending on the design:
-
punch the hole (if your design includes one)
-
add an eyelet and tassel (if desired)
-
round the corners
-
ink the edges
-
add a charm or ribbon
-
or simply leave the pull‑tab style as‑is
Your bookmark is ready to use or gift.
